Reminiscing About Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting / Turbo | Old School

Street Fighter II Turbo is where I really fell in love with the series. I played the Super Nintendo port collection first, which as I mentioned in my last post about Street Fighter, Turbo on the Super Nintendo is actually a collection of Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting on one cart. At first, I played it at my cousin’s house, who previously had the original Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo and then got this version later. The game had alternate colors, new moves, the stages looked different, it was a lot faster, and you could play as the boss characters now. I had so much fun playing, even though my cousins were way better than me at the time. Continue reading “Reminiscing About Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting / Turbo | Old School”

Reminiscing About Street Fighter II: Champion Edition | Old School

Looking back, I’m surprised I didn’t second guess that this game had an update that required people to re buy the whole game again. My first exposure to Champion Edition I was unaware of because I’m pretty sure I played Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting on the Super Nintendo first. For those who don’t know, the Normal version of that game as oppose to the Turbo version is actually a port of Champion Edition. My true memories of Champion Edition begin with the Genesis version. It was called Street Fighter II: Special Championship Edition and it was called that due to it also including Hyper Fighting. However, it was also because Capcom was forced to focus on the Champion Edition portion of the game rather than the newer Hyper Fighting due to Nintendo paying extra to have their version of the game, the previously mentioned Turbo, potentially sell better. It worked as many thought the Genesis version was based on the older update, even though it had a Hyper mode right in the main menu. Reminiscing About Street Fighter II: The World Warrior | Old School

I can’t remember ever seeing the original Street Fighter II in arcades. I remember the marquee, the purple and back cheetah print with the yellow lettering. But I don’t know where I remember it from. Maybe I did see the cabinet but never had the opportunity to play it. I have played it since via numerous collections like the Street Fighter Collection II on the PlayStation 1 and the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection on the PlayStation 4 and emulation. Regardless, by the time I had gotten into gaming, which was in the beginning of 1993, the arcades had already moved onto Champion Edition and Hyper Fighting. And yet, that wasn’t my introduction to Street Fighter. No, I was introduced through Street Fighter II on the Super Nintendo.

Reminiscing About The Spyro PS1 Trilogy | Old School

Spyro the Dragon has been on my mind recently. With the Reignited Trilogy coming out in November (it was going to be September but it was delayed), I’ve been replaying the original PlayStation 1 games on the PlayStation 3 via the PSone classics versions. I’ve played through the first two games and am working on the third one and it’s brought back memories of when I originally played this games back when they were new. So I thought I would share my nostalgia with you.

Tetris Is A Great Game For The Waiting Room | Old School

A long time ago, I posted an article where I had described how Earthworm Jim helped me cope with my house having been robbed. It provided for me an escape for a difficult situation. A lot of people play video games because they provide an escape from the real world. Video games provide a more interesting fake world to get immersed in. I don’t play video games for this reason, but there have been moments when I have. So I thought I’d share another instance where this has happened. Old School: The Nintendo Entertainment System

The Nintendo Entertainment System is 30 years old. My, my, my, am I getting old. In honor of the console’s 30th anniversary, I thought I would talk about my memories with the NES.

Old School: Almost Leaving Video Games

On a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, a question for the cast was if they ever walked away from video games, if any of them had ever stopped playing video games for an extended period of time. I thought I’d give my answer to this question because there was a time when I almost left video games entirely.

Old School: My PS3 Memories

The PS3’s moment in the sun is finally coming to an end, as it’ll no longer be the newest console on the market. While there are still games coming to the PS3, no more is it the focus of video game sites or even its parent company Sony. Therefore, it’s time to share some of my memories of the console. This is interesting because I’ve had three PS3 over the course of its lifetime, none for very long.

Old School: My First PS2 Memory

The PlayStation 2 turned 13 this past Saturday and I thought I would share my first memory of the console. My first memory of the console was actually from my older cousin. At the time, I was living with my grandparents and my cousin was living there too as he had got a job near where our grandparents were and was staying there until he got his own place. While he was gone during the day at work, I would sneak into his room and play his consoles.

Old School: Mickey Jump, Mickey Fall, Mickey Rises Again

The recent announcements about Epic Mickey 2 and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion has gotten me reminiscing about when Disney had good games being released. Oddly enough, this reminded me of something else from my childhood that I rarely think of. When I was little, for some reason, I was always being babysat. I wasn’t a latch key child per se but since both my mothers worked, after school, I was picked up by a babysitter and I stayed at their house until one of my mother’s came to take me home. There were various caretakers throughout my childhood but one of them I remember because she had like twenty some games that I had never heard of.
